Unlike traditional search engines that rank websites according to a complex formula, pay-per-click (PPC) search engines sell the top spots to the highest bidder.    Website owners can bid on search phrases pertaining to their business, such as “Anywhere USA Lodging”.  Many of the top search engines, such as AOL, MSN and Yahoo, now list PPC search results above their own search listings.  If you bid on the search phrase “Anywhere USA Lodging” and the current bid price is 10 cents per click, you would be charged $10 for every one hundred unique visitors that click into your website.  Consequently, PPC search engines are one of the most powerful and cost-effective marketing tools on the Internet.
